Does religion cause violence?

“Does religion promote violence? A question that rose after I recently read an article on Huffington Post titled “Stop Blaming Religion for Violence”. The article talks about many reasons where religion may cause violence with the attack on 9/11 causing the biggest debate of them all. There were three things some people believe contributed to this. 1) Religion is the key in understanding hate and violence 2) it’s a war going on between the Christian West and the Muslim Middle East and 3) eliminating religion may make the Islamic forget about colonization that they faced of centuries. However eliminating religion is not feasible and would not bring any one closer to peace, truth, nor love.

I believe religion is never the cause for violence and that everyone has his or her own way of interpreting the word of God. One may feel that God is leading them to do harm to others. In the Islamic belief you have to sacrifice yourself for the good of your brother. Religion should be embraced not feared because it does not poison an individual, let alone society as a whole. In the words of one of the greatest man to ever live, Dr. Martin Luther King, "Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge, which is power; religion gives man wisdom, which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals." So I have to say, I believe religion will never promote violence in any way, shape, or form.

  1. I don't think that it is religion that promotes violence either. I think a few extremists feel the need to harm people and use religion as an excuse. As for 9/11, if you talk to any Muslim people they will tell you that what the hijackers did was not in any way related to the Muslim religion. It is in fact a very peaceful religion if practiced correctly. I think most of the people that take a religious belief and twist it around until they are able to get something out of it that can harm people are actually just mentally ill people. Some are just incredibly smart and that is how they are able to brainwash others to believe in what they are doing. That was a very interesting blog that made me think. You did a good job.

  2. I also don't believe that religion promotes violence. It's the people who promote it. People get too emotional when someone says other wise and then they react in s violent manner, which isn't necessary. To each their one when it comes to religion.

  3. I do not feel that religion promotes violence. At the end of the day only you are in control of your actions not god or any other religious figure. You may feel as if they are trying to tell you to do bad but one is in control of their actions. Like you said religion is wisdom. Completely banning religion will not help or resolve any issues. People will still be deranged and some will be law abiding citizens.

  4. Religion does not promotes violence, its human citizen that promote it or do it to others. Religion is used to give us guides through life that we will not do anything bad to others. Why do we have to ban religion to help solve the problems in our society. No matter what people we still do things if we ban religion or anything us.
